Intersectionality & The Devil At The Crossroads
I started this blog a year ago and since that time I’ve been through a brutal “red pill” process. I have come to understand that the political Left in the West has unmoored itself from measurable reality and is dragging all of us into a new instantiation of a madness we thought we had left behind.
From my Pagan perspective, the insanity of the contemporary neo-Marxist Left is plainly a resurgence of the early-modern, witch-burning Christianity that lies at the foundation of Western civilization. Social-justice hysteria is exactly the same phenomenon as witch-hunting hysteria, stripped of its overtly religious justifications.
Witch-hunting hysteria and social-justice hysteria are both rooted in the absurd doctrine of inherent guilt. The Left has transformed Christian inherent guilt into secular “privilege,” which it defines as an “invisible backpack” full of tricks that “privileged” people use to the detriment of everyone else. “Privilege” is indistinguishable from witchcraft; those the Left deems to be “privileged” are the equivalent of hereditary witches; witches must be exorcised of their hereditary “privilege.”
Amid this milieu of shadow Christianity has grown another shadow projection, also stripped of its religious context, best known in the West via the hoodoo folk magic tradition. In its deracinated form this shadow projection is called intersectionality. It its original form, intersectionality is the story of the devil at the crossroads. The most famous example of this is the legend of blues guitarist Tommy Johnson (not Robert Johnson), who is said to have made a Faustian bargain with the devil at a crossroads in Mississippi, in exchange for great skill at his instrument.
Just as hoodoo does not reject outright the figure of the devil the way early modern Christianity did, neither does intersectionality reject “privilege” outright. Intersectionality requires “privilege” in the same way a pact with the devil requires the devil: without it, there can be no gain. Intersectionality is a pact with “privilege” for momentary success at the cost of what is eternal.
The power granted to intersectionality by “privilege” is the power of infinite accusation. Whereas the old Marxism granted just one accusation (you are rich and therefore guilty), and neo-Marxism swapped the old accusation for a new one (you are white and therefore guilty), intersectionality creates accusation anywhere two or more individuals are different in any way. Any difference between people is an “intersection” of “oppression” that must be “abolished” in the quest to establish sinless “equity.”
In all Christian traditions with which I am familiar, and in the Bible itself, accusation is the province of the devil; salvation from accusation is offered by Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross, but in secularized witch-hunting, no mechanism exists for forgiveness. In traditional religious language it is accurate to say that intersectionality has unleashed the devil on our civilization.
Under the intersectionality regime, there can be no achievement, because one person’s achievement highlights another’s lack of achievement, and that is unfair so the achievement must be destroyed. There can be no growth, because one person’s growth highlights another’s lack of growth, therefore that growth is unfair and must be destroyed. There can be no prosperity, or beauty, or building of anything, or knowledge, or exploration, or health, or improvement, or forward movement of any kind — all human endeavor, including evolution by natural selection, introduces an “intersection” of “oppression” which must be “abolished.”
Taken to its logical conclusion, intersectionality is the crushing of all human experience down to the most extreme level of suffering — even suffering that is less severe than another’s is “privilege” that must be “abolished” by the introduction of greater suffering, such that “equity” may be perfected.
Thus the momentary gain afforded by the act of accusation — the exercise of power — comes at the cost of human potential. Even potential itself is an “intersection” of “oppression,” since not everyone possesses identical potential.
Intersectionality is the end of human evolution. It is the negation of creation, of the birth-death-rebirth cycle. Its highest spiritual attainment is ressentiment, and its holiest act is destruction. It is the path to a permanent dark age, and if followed to its end, the path to annihilation. Intersectionality sacrifices the eternal — that is to say, the entirety of our human future — to the fleeting exercise of accusatory power.
Most who oppose the rise of the new authoritarian Left fear the establishment of Soviet-style totalitarianism. Intersectionality can’t allow this. What it will instead produce can be gleaned from understanding the unconscious or esoteric nature of the intersection, or crossroads, in systems of folk magic.
The crossroads represents liminality. A liminal place is neither here nor there; it is not this, but also not that; structures and distinctions dissolve into a soup of everything-that-no-longer-exists and everything-that-doesn’t-yet-exist. It is a place where the normal functioning of the world as we understand it does not apply, which is why the devil and/or other spirits can be found there and why diverse peoples around the world leave offerings to crossroads spirits. In liminal spaces, borders and boundaries of all types disintegrate and experience becomes inarticulable.
All cultures with which I am familiar recognize the existence of liminal spaces and appoint to specific persons the task of managing them and the spirits found there. These persons are generally separated from the wider society and act as a mediator between the mundane and the liminal. We know them by titles such as shaman, medicine man, priest/priestess, witch, cunning folk, intercessor, prophet.
Traversing the boundary between a mundane space and liminal space can often be psychologically challenging for untrained persons because one’s sense of self, of personal identity, disaggregates into a wider experience of consciousness that defies classification structures. It is not uncommon for an untrained person to emerge from an extreme experience of liminality with permanent psychological damage.
Intersectionality introduces an infinite number of intersections, or crossroads, into mundane society. The set-aside of liminal space practiced by all cultures is rejected, as is the set-aside of specific persons trained to manage and mediate it. Every interaction, from the individual level up to the level of identity groups, on up to the level of the entire civilization, is an “intersection” or crossroads where mundane reality is decomposed. This is especially true of the psychological boundaries by which individuals, groups, and civilizations understand themselves, their relationships to others, and their place in history and in universe.
What the new Left threatens is not totalitarianism, but ever-increasing chaos. Leftists who think they are going to overthrow reality and replace it with a new reality are sorely mistaken. Their own weapon makes the construction of anything new impossible; their own ideology can only destroy, and it will destroy everything anyone attempts to create, including totalitarianism. The results of the new Left’s project will not be some kind of new order, but the impossibility of order, including anarchistic order. The new Left seeks universal liminality and calls this “equity,” without understanding the nature of what it seeks.
